A Snake held on stick never JUMPS - WHY???

You might have seen Snake hunters in National Geographic channel holding a snake with a long stick.  Why do they always use a long stick and nothing else?? They can use many things to lift the snake but why do they always prefer long sticks?? Well this is because snakes cant jump when they are held upon a stick.I will tell you the reason why this is so, but be ready to listen some engineering terms.I will make it simple for you.

You will jump easily with your whole feet placed on the ground but it will be difficult for you to jump with heel up. Similarly, when a snake is lying on the ground its whole body is atop the ground and it can jump at you easily. But when you hold the snake with a long stick. only small part of the SNAKE'S BODY touches the stick and its not possible for the snake to develop enough THRUST to jump. Hope I made you understand the reason in a simple manner. If you are curious to know about THRUST and understand completely please read on..

First of all I have to explain to you the meaning of the term THRUST. Many times this word is confused with the term FORCE. There is a lot of difference between these two terms. When you push or pull ( ie. apply a force) an object and the object moves, then it is called as FORCE applied on that body. But when you push  something and you move back, it is called  THRUST. I will make this clear to you with a simple example. When you throw a ball it moves away from you and this is called a force. But when you want to JUMP, you push the ground with your feet. While jumping you push the ground but the ground doesn't move instead it pushes you back and this is what we call as THRUST.

That's it, this is the reason why a snake cant jump when you hold it with a stick. So feel safe to catch a snake with a stick. lol
