Why do we have GEARS in Cars and Bikes??

           We all know about GEARS in cars and bikes.We also know what gears do.The speed of your vehicle increases as you change the gears.But why should we do so?? Do you know why GEAR bikes are cheaper than AUTO GEAR bikes?

          

            When you start your bike or car, you start with the FIRST GEAR. If you start with higher gears your engine will stop.Why does your car or bike engine switches off when you try to start it in higher gears??You will find the answer for all these questions in this post.

       

          Using GEARS reduces the overall cost of the vehicle. By using gears we can drive the vehicle with a smaller engine than actually required. This makes the vehicle more EFFICIENT and also ECONOMICAL.  If you understand what a gear actually does, you will come to know how it reduces the engine capacity. I have explained everything here. As usual in a very simple language. I will make you understand everything without troubling you with many technical words.Gears also increase the efficiency of the engine.Here efficiency means to make maximum use of the fuel burnt in the engine.Let's see what this stuff actually does.

             I will start with telling you about STARTING TORQUE. Torque is not a very difficult word to understand.Any FORCE which rotates a body is called TORQUE.For example, you open the door by pushing the handle.The PUSH what you give actually rotates the door, this force what you give to open the door (rotate it) is called a TORQUE.I hope you understood this term.When you ride a cycle you give a force on the pedals, this force is called TORQUE.I will use the word FORCE instead of TORQUE to make it easy for you. When you have to rotate a wheel or any rotating body you must give maximum force to start it, once it starts rotating you don't have to give that much force as you give when starting. I will make it simple for you with an example.You would have seen small boys and girls riding cycle. Have you noticed this? While starting the cycle they stand up and put their body weight on the pedals to make them rotate. Once the cycle attains some speed they sit down and now they can push the pedals easily. It is difficult for them to pedal the cycle while starting. So when we rotate a body we must give maximum force (TORQUE)  while starting.

           Now, I will tell something about engine. Your car or bike engine cannot run at all speeds. It has some minimum speed above which it can run smoothly and also there is a maximum speed above which it can't rotate.

              

         One more thing you should know is that when the engine is rotating at high speed the TORQUE is very less.Which means the engine cant rotate the wheels. At the same time when the engine rotates at slow speed the TORQUE is more.So at slow speed the engine can rotate the wheels easily.

         

           As I told mentioned earlier, we must give maximum torque while starting and for maximum torque the engine must run at slow speed. But we cant run the engine at very slow speed because it will switch off. This is why we use GEARS. Gears to reduce the speed so that we get maximum torque so that the wheel starts rolling.

       
       Once the wheel starts rotating we don't have to give that much of torque so we change over to SECOND GEAR which will increase the speed of the car or bike. When the speed further increases we can change over to THIRD GEAR.We don't have to bother about the torque now because once the wheel starts rolling, it doesn't require that much of torque.

          

             Normally the third gear in cars are driven directly by the engine. The FOURTH and FIFTH gears further increases the SPEED of the engine which is an added advantage. Because driving your car at 30 km/hr speed in THIRD GEAR and driving your car at 60 km/hr in FIFTH gear uses the same amount of FUEL. So driving at higher gears is economical.

             

             By using gears we can reduce the power of the engine.So we can use a smaller engine reduces the overall cost of the vehicle and also increases the efficiency of the engine because smaller engines use less fuel.
