Auspicious 108

           This post consists of purely factual data. The number 108 is special and considered sacred in many eastern religions especially in Hinduism and Buddhism. When I came to know some facts about this number I was amazed and I wanted to share this with all of you. I have collected information from various sites and presented them here for you.The early Vedic sages were renowned mathematicians and in fact invented our number system. I bet you will accept Indians were brilliant mathematicians and you will want to know more about it even if you are an atheist. Here's something interesting you should know.       
  • Distance between earth and sun = 108 times sun-diameter
  • Distance between earth and moon = 108 times moon-diameter
  • Diameter of the sun = 108 times the earth diameter.
          Amazing isn't it? Do you think this is a mere coincidence? I don't think so. This is just a sample for you. There are many more FACTS given below. 



  • One of the major interpretation of number 108 is the number of 12 zodiac signs multiplied with 9 planets in the zodiac, 9 x 12 = 108.
  • There are 108 forms of DANCE in Indian traditions.
  • 108 degrees Fahrenheit is the internal temperature at which the human body's vital organs begin to fail from overheating.
  • There are 108 feelings, with 36 related to the past, 36 related to the present, and 36 related to the future.
  • Volume expansion of freezing water is roughly 108%.
  • The current periodic table claims a few more than 108.
  • According to Ayurveda, there are 108 pressure points in the body, where consciousness and flesh intersect to give life to the living being.
  • There are 108 weak points in the body according to South Indian and Chinese MARTIAL Schools.
  • Its said that 1 stands for ONE thing (GOD), 0 for NOTHING (Emptiness) and 8 for INFINITY (Eternity).
              Indian Sages think that the outer cosmology (Space and heavenly bodies - the UNIVERSE) is the mirror of the inner cosmology of the human. We don't know the HEIGHT (extent) of the universe and similarly we don't know the DEPTH of our inner SOUL. Therefore, the number 108 is also taken to represent the 'distance' from the body of the devotee to the God within us. This is why the number 108 is significant in Hinduism.
