Ever wondered how a cellular phone which is an electronic device vibrates? I had this question in my mind for days. There is a small mechanical arrangement inside your phone which makes your phone to vibrate. Lets see how this works.
There is a small DC motor, a gear and a small weight attached to the gear. The motor drives the gear which is mechanically connected to it. This gear has a small weight which is not placed at the centre of the gear. This means the gear is off-set from the centre of the gear. This gear is like an unbalanced disc. When this gear or disc (let me call it a disc for ease) rotates at high speed it creates heavy vibrations. As this arrangement is attached to the phone's body, the vibration is transmitted to the body of the phone.
And this is how your phone alerts you when you put it in silent mode.
