What's this "QUARTZ" written on your WATCH??

           Have you read this word "QUARTZ" anywhere?? Yes, you should have surely read it on your WATCH or your WALL CLOCK. But have you ever thought why this is written here? On seeing this word I thought it was the name of the company which made the CLOCK but I was confused to see this "QUARTZ" written on many watches of different companies.

             Only then I decided to know the reason why its written and found out that its not the name of company or a person but its name of the TIMING TECHNOLOGY which is used in that WATCH to show the TIME. Now, I will tell you in detail what exactly this QUARTZ is.

           In short, Quartz is a crystal which vibrates for 32,768 times a second. A counter counts this and sends signal to the clock to move its SECOND HAND.I have explained this in detail in a SIMPLE manner below.

        

               Before that I have to tell you about something called TIMING. The clock doesn't know how long ONE SECOND is.So something must be there inside to tell the clock that ONE SECOND is over.The TIMER gives the TIMING of one second to the clock. The clock receives this TIMING and then it moves its SECOND HAND. This is how a CLOCK or a WATCH works. The SECOND, MINUTE and HOUR hand are all same in all the WATCHES and CLOCKS but how the TIMING is given to the CLOCK differs.

       

             You would have seen big OLD CLOCKS with a PENDULUM dancing inside it. This type of clock is a MECHANICAL CLOCK. It doesn't require a BATTERY for its working. Its purely MECHANICAL with many gears and springs to give the so called TIMING to the CLOCK.

      

            Now let me tell you about "QUARTZ". It is used in modern ELECTRONIC WATCHES and CLOCKS to give the TIMING of one second.This Quartz is a crystal which VIBRATES when we pass current to it.The time it takes for this to vibrate once depends upon its size and shape. The shape and size are uniform all around the world so that its frequency is equal to 32,768 Hz. This means that it vibrates for 32,768 times in one second. There is also a COUNTER placed inside the watch. This COUNTER counts the number of times it vibrates and gives signal to the SECOND HAND to move once it vibrates 32,768 times.
