How does a ZIPPER works??

A Zipper or Zip fastener is a mechanical device used for closing two open ends of fabric or any material. This small piece of engineering has a lot of applications. It is even used in Space suits and Pressure suits developed by NASA.

The zipper consists two rows of teeths facing each other with a small offset. Each teeth is not placed exactly opposite to other teeth; It is misplaced by a small distance.

Why February month has the least number of days?

February being the second month of the year, has the least number of days. How was February chosen to have the least number of days?

The present day calendar which is used worldwide today, is called the Julian calendar. The original calendar has the same 12 months and 365 days a year and 366 days for a leap year. When the calendar was first introduced; March 1 was celebrated as the new year because march was the first month of this original calendar. So February was the last month and it was allotted with the remaining number of days. This is why February has the least number of days. February remained as the last month of the year until 450 BC when it became the second month of the year.

Why TANKER TRUCKS are made cylindrical and not cubical?

Many kinds of liquids are transported by road and railway. The tanks carrying these liquids are made cylindrical in shape and not cubical. Why is this so?  If tanks are made in cube or cuboid, the capacity of the tanks will increase and they can hold more cargo. Even the large tanks used in refineries for holding the petroleum products are cylindrical in shape.

Why do Soft Drink Bottles have 5 bumps at the bottom??

Soft drink and soda bottles, especially those made of plastic are not flat bottomed. The foot of the bottles usually has 5 bumps (corrugation). The bottles are not designed so to give it a fancy look. This post details you about the engineering in bottles. You will not find these bumps in water bottles or juice bottles. Water bottles have small indents to improve the stability of the bottle.

The bumps or the corrugations in the foot of the bottle increases the strength of the bottle. Take a sheet of paper and fold it. You can easily fold the paper. Now bend any one side of the sheet and try to fold it. You will now feel some resistance. Now, roll the paper into a pipe and try folding it. It will be little hard to fold the paper pipe. Bending any material increases its strength and rigidity. This is because; rolling the paper increases its moment of inertia around the bending axis.

Where does the water dripping out of your Air Conditioner come from?

The water dripping out is same as the water droplets which forms over a cold water bottle when it is placed outside the refrigerator. The moisture which is present inside the room gets condensed and comes out of the air conditioner as water. You may ask whether it is necessary to remove the moisture present inside the room. The answer is YES.

Our living condition is greatly affected by the moisture level in air. Our body gets cooled by sweating. Sweat evaporates by taking away the heat from our body. If the moisture content in the air is very high, body sweat cannot evaporate easily and so our body will not get cooled effectively. This makes us feel very uncomfortable. This is why we feel uncomfortable even in a cloudy day in coastal areas and sometimes after rain. This is all because of high levels of moisture in the air.
